The Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) is a Central University established under an act of Parliament in 1998. The University has its Headquarter in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. The university has been entrusted with the responsibility to promote and develop the Urdu language and provide higher, technical and vocational education in Urdu medium. The university gives special emphasis on women’s education. The University is fully funded by the University Grants Commission and functions under the aegis of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.
The UGC Act empowers the University to provide education through both the distance and campus modes of education. The University offers postgraduate, graduate, diploma and certificate courses through distance education. It has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi.
The Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) has 8 Regional Centers (one each at Delhi, Patna, Bangalore, Bhopal, Darbhanga, Kolkatta, Srinagar and Mumbai) and Five sub- Regional Centers (one each at Lucknow, Sambhal, Hyderabad, Mewat and Jammu ). The University has 108 study centers through which 56000 students pursues education. One Examination Center is established at Jeddah for NRI students at Saudi Arabia. The University also has made adequate progress in campus education by establishing 6 schools and 12 departments offering 28 study programs. A Department of Translation, Women’s Education and Centre of Women’s Studies too have been established to offer courses at the post-graduate level.
To offer education to educators the university has established Teachers Training Colleges at Srinagar (J&K), Bhopal and Darbhanga. These colleges offer B.Ed. program in Urdu Medium. The University Grants Commission has sanctioned an Urdu Cultural Center to preserve important rare books, rare cultural artifacts, paintings, sculptures, etc. The University has initiated several Development Schemes granted under the UGC X Plan. The Schemes are continued / likely to be continued under the UGC XI Plan.
