The Government of Andhra Pradesh has established the Dravidian University to conduct study and research and to promote Dravidian languages both at home and abroad. The university was established through a Legislative Act in October 1997 with support from other southern States of India.
The university is located at Kuppam of Chittor District in the southwestern tip of Andhra Pradesh, which is only 4kms from Karnataka, 8 kms from Tanil Nadu and very close to Kerala Border.
The main purpose behind establishing the University is to promote integrated studies on the common heritage of the Dravidian speakers facilitating a strong perception of oneness among them.
The university has 17 Departments and 6 centers. Dravidian University is the first university in the state to adopt Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). Additional Soft Skills Enhancement Training (ASSET) has been made a part of CBCS. The skills are: Communication, Computer, Analytical, Personality Development, and Career Perspectives.
